In 2017 and 2018, the United States and Canada each issued postage stamps showcasing different species of sharks.  Interestingly, the US stamps were issued to coincide with Discovery Channel’s annual “Shark Week.”  It shows just how fascinated we’ve become with these top predators and the important role they play in maintaining the complex ecosystems of our oceans.  Many of these species are threatened by climate change, habitat destruction, and other human activities, and these stamps emphasize the importance of protecting them.

The booklet of 10 Canada stamps picturing the great white, basking, blue, Greenland, and shortfin mako sharks.  The front of the booklet pictures a great white shark in front of a deep blue, ocean background.  The interior includes ten stamps plus an image of a blue shark against a similar ocean background as the front.  When closed, the back of the booklet includes facts about each shark species pictured on the stamps – in both English and French.

 

A sheet of 20 US shark stamps featuring the shortfin mako, whale, thresher, hammerhead, and great white shark.  The selvage features a larger image of the great white shark stamp.  Includes four of each stamp design.
